Things to Do in the Forest

One forest, a full day of simple pleasures. Here is everything worth doing at Changa Manga — with honest notes on what to confirm before you go.

The Forest Railway

The signature experience. A miniature tourist train runs on the alignment of the old 2 ft logging railway, winding through dense plantation blocks where the light comes down in golden shafts. Sit on the left for the best views, hold your hat, and keep your camera ready — the ride alone is worth the trip for most families.

Lunar Lake Boating

Lunar Lake (sometimes called Mehtabi Lake) is the forest’s calm heart — a broad, still sheet of water where paddle boats drift between the shadows of the trees. Officially listed among the forest’s recreation facilities, it is the perfect late-afternoon slot when the heat softens and the light turns gold.

Wildlife & Birdwatching

Golden jackals, wild boars, mongooses and partridges all live here, along with peacocks and dozens of bird species. The forest is also home to the WWF-Pakistan Vulture Restoration and Captive Breeding Facility — Pakistan’s only ex-situ vulture programme, breeding the critically endangered Asian White-backed Vulture. It is a working conservation site, so public access is limited; enquire locally rather than expecting a walk-in visit.

Picnic Lawns & Bridges

The forest department maintains picnic lawns, a pagoda-style pavilion, and the crossing every visitor remembers: suspension and cantilever bridges that sway just enough to make children scream with delight. Claim a shady spot early on weekends — the best lawns go quickly in season.

Nature Photography

Straight plantation avenues, backlit mist, peacocks crossing the track, and the miniature train rounding a bend — Changa Manga is a generous subject. Early morning delivers the light; late afternoon delivers the silhouettes. Please photograph wildlife from a respectful distance.

Also on the Map

The forest department’s facility list also includes a swimming pool and a mini zoo, alongside walking paths through the plantation. Facility status and charges change season by season, so treat these as a happy surprise to confirm rather than a guarantee.

The Crossing Everyone Remembers

The colourful suspension bridge over Lunar Lake sways just enough to make the crossing the most photographed thirty seconds of the day. The paddle boats, the pagoda pavilion and the cantilever bridge all sit within a short stroll — the natural heart of an afternoon in the forest.
